Bible Interpretation in the Context of Feminist Theology

In this study, feminist theological studies which/that emerged in order to include the female expreience, which is lacking in traditional theology and feminist theologians’ approaches to the Bible and their interpretation methodologies have been exami- ned. Feminist theology, deals with the reconstruction of femi- nist criticism and gender paradigms by bringing them to the theological field. Thus feminist theologians have questioned the use of masculine language about God, the subordination of wo- men in creation, causing them to fall, their exclusion from apos- tolic duties such as apostolic and priesthood because they are not theomorphic and cristomorphic, and the male dominance established in the understanding of sin, atonement and salva- tion. In this context, they argued that symbols and language should be doconstructed along with saving sacred texts from male dominated interpretations. Feminist theologians’ claim that the Bible is the product of patriarchal religion in patri- archal cultures has revived the issue of authority. On the one hand, different approaches have emerged, such as those who think that it should be completely rejected because it continues violence, alienation from God and submission to patriarchy and those who try to preserve the authority of the Holy text by tr- ying to find a saving essence in the text despite the destructive effects of patriarchy. Thus these different approaches have been examined through the methodologies followed and the examp- les given in the Bible.
