Alman din bilimcisi ve filolog Friedrich Max Müller, modern dönemde dinler tarihinin öncülerinden birisi olarak kabul edilir. Bu bağlamda 1870 yılında “Introduction to the Science of Religion” adıyla Kraliyet Enstitüsünde dört ders verir ve aynı adla bunları kitaplaştırır. Derslerinde Dil Biliminin kazanımlarını Din Biliminde kullanmanın yararlarını ve sonuçlarını antik dinler ve çeşitli anlatılar çerçevesinde ortaya koymaya çalışır. Dil ve din aileleri arasındaki ilişkiden hareketle kutsal kitaplarının özelliklerini inceler ve karşılaştırma yönteminin nasıl kullanılması gerektiğini ve dinlerin sınıflandırılmasına ilişkin düşüncelerini ifade eder. Aryan, Semitik ve Turan şeklinde ayırdığı din ailelerinin erken dönemlerine uzanarak filolojik bakımdan tanrının izini sürer ve aralarındaki benzerlikler yoluyla ortak bir tanrı fikrine ulaşma gayretiyle hareket eder. Nihayetinde dinleri anlamanın anahtarının her inanca merhametle ve özellikle literal olmayan bir şekilde yaklaşmak olduğunu deklare eder.

German theologian and philologist Friedrich Max Müller is considered one of the pioneers of the history of religions in the modern period. In this context, he gave four lectures at the Royal Institution in 1870 under the name “Introduction to the Science of Religion” and compiled them into a book with the same name. In these lectures, he tried to reveal the benefits and results of using the achievements of Linguistics in Religious Science within the framework of ancient religions and various narratives. Based on the relationship between language and religious families, he examined the characteristics of holy books and expresses his thoughts on how the comparison method should be used and the classification of religions. He traced God philologically, going back to the early periods of the religious families he divided into Aryan, Semitic and Turan, and acted with the effort of reaching a common idea of God through the similarities between them. Ultimately, he declared that the key to understanding religions is to approach each belief with compassion and especially in a non-literal way.
