Semantic Depth in the Qur’an: A Dictionary of Difficult Words Is a lexicographical
study that systematically examines rare, unfamiliar, polysemous,
and contextually difficult expressions in the Qur’an. Rather
than limiting itself to the lexical definitions of Qur’anic vocabulary, the
work seeks to identify the meanings words acquire within their specific
contexts, explore their semantic dimensions, and present their interpretations
within the classical exegetical tradition. The study draws
upon classical Qur’anic commentaries, works on Gharīb al-Qurʾān, the
Wujūh wa al-Naẓāʾir tradition, and major sources of Arabic lexicography
and linguistics. Entries are arranged according to the Arabic alphabet
and include the Qur’anic form of each word, its root, lexical meaning,
contextual Qur’anic meaning, relevant verse or verses, and Turkish
translation. Each entry further discusses linguistic and semantic features,
summarizes significant exegetical interpretations, and, where
applicable, examines the different meanings assumed by the same expression
in various Qur’anic contexts from the perspective of Wujūh wa
al-Naẓāʾir. By clarifying the relationship between lexical and contextual
meaning, the work contributes to a more nuanced understanding of the
multilayered semantic structure of Qur’anic discourse. It serves as an
academic reference for students and researchers in Islamic studies as
well as readers interested in the conceptual and linguistic world of the
Qur’an.
