Discussions on Prophethood in Early Theology
-In the Context of Sunni and Mu’tazilite Approaches-
This study examines the issue of prophethood within the framework of
the early theological tradition in the context of sunnī and muʿtazilite
approaches. Topics such as the conceptual framework of prophethood,
the nature of revelation, the understanding of miracles, and the prophets’
ismeta are discussed comparatively on the basis of the theological
structures of both sects. The divergences on the possibility and necessity
of prophethood are based on the fundamental differences in their conceptions
of God, the universe and human beings. In addition, the claims
of thinkers who reject prophethood on the rational level, such as the
Berāhimeen and some philosophers, are analyzed, and the theological
arguments developed against these objections are included. Throughout
the study, primary sources are prioritized and classical texts are analyzed
in detail. The systematic structure of the theological arguments is
revealed by focusing on the issues that concretize the sunnī and mu’tazilite
divergences. In this respect, the study reveals both the theoretical
foundations of prophethood and how it was rendered defensible in the
early theological tradition.
