A Study of Ibn al-Jawzī and His Work
Manāqib Amīr al-Muʾminīn ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb
Within the historiography of Islam, from the 1st to the 6th centuries AH,
numerous authors produced valuable works in various fields that served
as sources for the study of history, including general histories, maghāzī
and sīra, ṭabaqāt, urban histories, geography, genealogy, and related
disciplines. These works have attracted the attention of researchers
due to the valuable information they provide for understanding the
periods in which they were composed. Abū al-Faraj Jamāl al-Dīn ʿAbd
al-Raḥmān b. ʿAlī b. Muḥammad Ibn al-Jawzī (d. 597/1201), who lived in
the 6th century AH and authored works in numerous fields, is among
these scholars. This study examines the place of Ibn al-Jawzī’s manāqib
of ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb within the biographical and manāqib literature
of Islamic historical works, his conception of ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb,
his selection and use of reports, the historical authenticity of reports
concerning ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, the sources and methodology he
employed, and the reflections of the intellectual milieu of his period on
the manāqib narrative.
The subject of this study is Abū al-Faraj Ibn al-Jawzī and his work
Manāqib Amīr al-Muʾminīn ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb. The study aims to
introduce and analyze the aforementioned work and to determine its
place within Islamic historiography. The research employs the historical
method as the principal method of qualitative inquiry, supplemented
by textual and source criticism. The study demonstrates that Ibn al-
Jawzī possessed substantial expertise not only in the Islamic sciences
but also in the field of history. It has been established that the work
under examination presents ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb both as an individual
and as a statesman. The work, which is divided into eighty sections,
draws upon sources belonging to the genres of sīra, ṭabaqāt, ḥadīth, and
history, and its contents consist predominantly of transmitted reports.
A comparison of these reports with historical accounts has revealed
that some of them are inconsistent with the extant historical evidence.
