The Place of Abu Ali al-Farisi in the Science of Sarf
Abu Ali al-Farisi, a prominent linguist of the fourth century AH, is said by his students and some biographers to have emerged between the time of Sibawayhi and al-Farisi, stating that no better linguist than al-Farisi emerged. The author, who authored over 30 works, wrote a work on grammar called al-Izah, which served as a reference book in madrasas for 300 years. His later work, al-Takmile, which included grammar rules and complementary works to al-Izah, has held a significant place in the tradition and has become a resource for those studying grammar. We believe that this work, one of the most important treasures of the Arabic literary collection, sheds light on grammar today.
"Sarf is the mother of sciences, grammar is the father of them."
