Science and Civilization are built upon the founding personalities and the inks that
dripped from their pens on the journey of knowledge. Imam Abū Manṣūr Muḥammad
al-Māturīdī is one of the scholars to whom immense debt is owed in the fields of Islamic
Civilization and knowledge. His exegesis titled Ta’wīlāt al-Qur’ān, one of the two
magnum opuses that ensured his name would reach succeeding centuries, has been the
subject of numerous academic studies worldwide, particularly in our country, despite
being published at a considerably late date, and research in this direction continues
with enthusiasm. This humble study in your hands is also the product of the same
excitement and effort, aiming to examine al-Māturīdī, his Ta’wīlāt al-Qur’ān, and the
exegete’s methodology within the context of this commentary. The study endeavors to
analyze and express al-Māturīdī’s perspective concerning various fields of Islamic
knowledge, particularly his outlook on exegesis, Qirāʼāt (recitations), and interpretative
methodology. We extend our gratitude to all stakeholders for the effort they put forth in
realizing this work—which was produced in addition to all the other scholarly
endeavors created in our country over the short period of a quarter-century specifically
on al-Māturīdī—with the aim that it takes its place in the literature concerning the
exegete, and we sincerely hope that it will be utilized, even slightly, in the rooting of al-
Māturīdī in our world of knowledge.
