The Virtues of the Most Beloved
Written by Hüseyin b. Hasan et-Tokadî in 1650, Kifâyetü’l-lebîb fî fezâ’ili’lhabîb
is a classical work of faza’il and shama’il focusing on the unique virtues,
sublime character, and physical attributes of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). This
study, brought into the modern academic world by Assoc. Prof. Hakan Temir
and Ahmet Enes Demir, is based on the only existing manuscript written in the
author’s own hand. The introductory part of the work emphasizes that showing
respect, veneration, and reverence to the Messenger of Allah is a religious obligation
after his passing, just as it was during his lifetime, and that one must act
with high etiquette in environments where his name is mentioned.In the first
main section of the work, over sixty special attributes of the Prophet are detailed.
Within this scope, divine favors such as his light being the first created
entity, the sealing of prophethood with him, his being sent to all of humanity,
and his ascension beyond time and space through the Mi’raj are explained. Furthermore,
significant space is given to his superiorities, such as being granted
the authority of intercession through the “Makam-ı Mahmud” on the Day of
Judgment and his ummah’s role as witnesses over other nations.The second
part addresses the Messenger of Allah’s character, shaped by the Quran, and his
physical features. While the author conveys character traits such as his generosity,
forbearance, humility, and forgiving nature, he depicts his physical appearance
-including his radiant face, medium height, and exceptional beautythrough
various narrations. It is stated that even the sweat from the Prophet’s
blessed body smelled more pleasant than musk and that this scent lingered in
the streets he passed through. The work concludes with the supplications of
certain great figures and selections from Imam Busiri’s Qasida al-Burda. In conclusion,
this study is a treasure of wisdom that reflects the spiritual atmosphere
of 17th-century Ottoman Tokat and aims to engrave the love of the Prophet
into hearts.
