Sheikh Muhammed al-Hazîn and the Eulogies and Elegies Written About Him
This work explores the life, scholarly and spiritual persona of
Sheikh Muhammed al-Hazîn al-Farsâfî, one of the prominent Sufi
figures of Siirt, along with the poetic expressions of deep affection
shown toward him. Sheikh al-Hazîn was not only a scholarly authority
but also a revered spiritual guide whose influence extended
beyond Siirt, leaving lasting impressions across a wide region.
The study addresses Sheikh al-Hazîn’s educational background,
spiritual journey, and his appointment to the Sufi khalīfah (succession).
Special emphasis is placed on his affiliation with the
Khalidiyya branch of the Naqshbandi order, his establishment of a
medrese (Islamic school) in Siirt, and the impact he had on the local
population. In addition, the work examines selected poems
from his Dīwān, which revolve around themes such as divine love,
faith, and Sufi truths.
The core section of the book presents 22 poems written in his honor—
15 eulogies (madīḥ), 6 elegies (marsiyah), and 1 poem about
his shrine. In these poems, Sheikh al-Hazîn is praised with titles
such as “light of the hearts,” “refuge of the souls,” “spiritual savior of
the era,” “a guide infused with divine secrets,” “gate of mercy,” and
“sun of spiritual illumination.” His mystical insight, rhetorical eloquence,
and miraculous virtues are extolled with deep reverence.
Written in Arabic, Kurdish, and Persian by various poets, these
qasidas reflect the immense love and admiration felt for Sheikh al-
Hazîn by both his disciples and the broader community.
This work is a valuable contribution that not only documents the
life of a spiritually enlightened Sufi master, but also sheds light on
the rich poetic and mystical heritage of Siirt.
