Reflections of Muhammad’s Personality in the Qur’an
When we look at the content of the Quran, we see that it takes into account the situation of the Arabs living in the 7th century, especially Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), who were its first addressees. Some verses are directly addressed to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and mention his personal situation and behavior. Therefore, we can say that the personality of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) played an influential role in determining the content of the Quran. Understanding the personality of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) becomes crucial in understanding the Quran. A person’s personality is formed by the combination of innate temperament and the character developed through life experiences. In the formation of Prophet Muhammad’s (PBUH) personality, factors such as being an orphan, growing up with a wet nurse in the desert, losing his mother and grandfather at a young age, shepherding, and traveling with trade caravans were decisive. As a result, he had a personality characterized by forbearance, forgiveness, gentleness, eagerness for people to believe, being deeply affected by negative attitudes shown to him, and being noted for his justice. For this reason, Allah sometimes praised his tolerance and gentleness, and sometimes criticized him for these behaviors. Sometimes, Allah spoke on his behalf when he was too shy to speak, and sometimes commanded him to be harsh and relentless towards the unbelievers. One of the most sensitive issues when it comes to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is his feelings towards women. At all times, certain groups have raised objections to Islam by bringing up his marriages and certain aspects of his wives. However, when we consider that he was also a human being and take into account the general acceptances of his time, it becomes clear that these objections are unfounded. In conclusion, understanding the personality of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is crucial for the best understanding of the Quran.
