Cinema and Education Representation of Formal Education in Turkish Cinema
Viewing cinema as a medium of art, entertainment, and mass communication offers a broad perspective on cinema. Cinema's role as a means of entertainment was a fundamental goal in its early years. However, as its potential was explored through directors and actors, it began to carry diverse meanings beyond entertainment. As a medium of mass communication, cinema reveals its educative, guiding, and manipulative nature. Therefore, this study aims to examine cinema's artistic and entertainment aspects alongside its educational perspective, and thus, its focus will be on cinema as a medium of mass communication.
While the study emphasizes the importance of cinema in education, the purpose of this study is to investigate how formal education is represented in Turkish cinema's films. Cinema is one of the most effective communication tools affecting the masses today. It is not expected that it will not have a say in such a broad and controversial area as education. Films directly or indirectly related to education have also been produced in Turkish cinema. This study has selected films that offer the most material that can facilitate discussion of the topic. While illuminating their respective eras, the films also establish a connection between the past and the future. Educational films are films that center on educational ideology, approaches to school, education administrators, students, teachers, and parents. These concepts are presented in a cohesive manner in the films.
